Car Accident and Whiplash Care in Sunnyvale

Hurt in a car accident in Sunnyvale? Tropea Chiropractic Inc treats car accident injuries and whiplash at 182 S Murphy Ave. Dr. Tony Tropea examines you, documents your injuries from the first visit and builds a plan around what the exam finds. Most accident patients are seen the same day. Call (408) 329-9604 and tell the office what happened.

First: do you need the emergency room?

Call 911 for a head injury with passing out, fainting or confusion, or for an injury to your neck or spine, particularly with loss of feeling or inability to move. Go to an emergency department for an unusual or bad headache, dizziness or weakness that does not go away, or severe pain anywhere on your body. Those lines come from MedlinePlus. Chiropractic care comes after that. Read more in whiplash and neck pain after a crash and back pain after a wreck.

What happens at your first visit?

  • You talk first. You say how the crash happened, where it hurts and what feels stiff or numb.
  • Dr. Tony examines you. He checks your neck’s range of motion, tests your reflexes and looks for muscle spasm or nerve involvement.
  • He asks about the rest. Headaches, dizziness and sleep, along with anything else that changed after the crash.
  • Everything gets written down. Your words and his findings, the same day.
  • Treatment starts if you are able. You get the plan, and you can ask questions about it.

“I was greeted from his front desk staff. They are very professional and courteous. Some light introductory paper work, then greeted by Dr. Tropea, followed with a short assessment,” wrote Angela Velez in a Google review.

How is whiplash treated here?

Not every injury gets the same treatment. Whiplash needs different work than a herniated disc, and the plan is built around what your exam shows.

  • Whiplash: often gentle manual spinal manipulation first, easing the neck toward normal motion without forcing anything.
  • Herniated or bulging discs: often spinal decompression or flexion-distraction, which aim to take pressure off the disc.
  • Sciatica and pinched nerves: sometimes the Thompson drop table or the activator method, a gentler, low-force approach.
  • Shoulder, wrist or knee injuries from bracing during the crash: extremity adjustment.

Spinal manipulation has real side effects and limits, including rare serious ones. Read what the research says before your first visit, and tell Dr. Tony about your health history and medications.

Why does the documentation matter?

Your insurer or attorney will want a record that connects what hurts to the crash. Dr. Tony documents your exam and findings from the first visit, then each visit after it. If you have an attorney, the office sends records and reports directly to them. Attorneys can read more on the For Attorneys page.

“He is experienced with personal injury accidents and made me feel comfortable asking questions since this was completely new to me,” wrote Tiffany Chen in a Google review.

How does billing work after a crash?

$0 upfront with an attorney lien. Most accident care here is paid one of three ways, and you often pay nothing out of pocket:

  • Your own auto insurance. Coverage like MedPay on your policy, which the California Department of Insurance says can pay for immediate medical care no matter who is at fault. The office bills it directly.
  • The at-fault driver. If the accident wasn’t your fault, the other driver’s insurance is responsible for your care, and the office helps document it for your claim.
  • Treatment on a lien. Working with an attorney? The office can treat on a lien, or letter of protection, so payment waits until your case settles.

Coverage varies by policy and case. The office will confirm exactly what applies to you before treatment begins. Just ask.

What other California paperwork should you know about?

Two deadlines catch people out. The DMV’s SR-1 report is due within 10 days if someone was hurt, even slightly. And if you cannot work, State Disability Insurance has a 49-day window to file.

Request an Appointment
  • How soon should I be seen after my accident?

As soon as you can, once emergencies are ruled out. Most accident patients are seen the same day. Call (408) 329-9604.

  • How much does it cost if I was in a car accident?

Often nothing out of pocket. Care is often billed to MedPay on your own policy or the at-fault driver's insurance, or handled on a lien with your attorney and paid when your case settles. Coverage varies by policy and case, and the office will confirm what applies to you before treatment begins.

  • Do I need an attorney to be seen?

No. If you have one, the office coordinates directly with them and provides the records they need. If you do not, the office can point you in the right direction.

  • What does treatment on a lien mean?

A lien, also called a letter of protection, lets you get care now and pay for it later out of your settlement, when your case resolves. If you are working with an attorney, the office can treat on a lien so there is no upfront cost to you while your case is pending. Coverage varies by policy and case.

  • What should I bring to my first visit?

A photo ID, your auto insurance information, the accident or police report if you have it, and your attorney's information if you are working with one. If you do not have all of it, come in anyway and the office will help you sort it out.
